Social Insurance Services

Social Insurance Services include the Illness allowance, Disability Pension, and Social Card.

    It is granted to persons “incapacitated for work”, who are defined by legislation as insured persons who “due to illness or physical or mental disability, which begins to deteriorate substantially after his / her insurance, can not gain from the work he is reasonably expected to perform, account of his or her strengths, skills, education and routine employment … the amount normally earned by a person in the same region and a professional category of physically and spiritually healthy person with the the same education”.

    The aim is to ensure the decent living of citizens who are expected to remain permanently unable to work.

    Beneficiaries: Uninsured employees, self-employed and optional insured persons working in the service of a Cypriot employer abroad, under the age of 63, who:

    • Are unable to work for at least 156 days
    • Are expected to remain permanently incapacitated for work, ie they can not earn from work that is reasonably expected to perform more than one-third of the amount normally earned by a healthy employee of the same occupational category and education in the same region or more than ½ of this amount if is the applicant is aged 60 – 63 years old
    • It has been at least 3 years since the date of their insurance commencement
    • They have paid or assimilated insurable earnings in the previous contribution year
    • They have a weekly average paid or assimilated insurable earnings equal to at least 25% of the years covered by the reference period concerned

    Benefit: Monthly financial assistance consisting of a basic pension and a supplementary pension, calculated on the basis of the beneficiary’s insurable earnings and the incapacity rate.

    After the age of 63, the disability pension is converted into an old-age pension.

    The application must be submitted within 3 months from the date of incapacity for work, and is paid retrospectively.

    Recipients of Invalidity Pension are entitled to free medical treatment at state nursing homes.

    If the insured person is entitled to both sickness benefit and other benefit from the social security fund, he receives only the highest benefit (except in the case of widow’s or missing person’s allowances). In all cases it is forbidden to receive both a Sickness and Disability Pension.

    Beneficiaries: Citizens, irrespective of their nationality, who reside permanently in Cyprus and are:

    • Over 63 years of age with at least one year of insurance in Cyprus and recipients of an old – age and widow’s pension
    • Employers of disability pension and orphan’s benefit due to inability to work
    • Over 63 years old, depending on the pension of the persons mentioned above
    • Beneficiaries of social pension

    Provision: Social Card or Social Card Beneficiary, which must be presented to secure the above rights / benefits.

    The aim is to ensure the decent living of citizens during a period of discontinuation of work due to illness. The cessation of employment under legislation (N.59 (I) / 2010) may have a maximum duration of 156 days.

    Beneficiaries: Uninsured employees, self-employed and optional insured persons working in the service of a Cypriot employer abroad (aged 16 until retirement) who,

    • They do not work due to illness and the entire salary / wage is not paid by their employer for the period of their illness
    • They have paid or assimilated insurable earnings in the previous contribution year
    • At least 26 weeks have elapsed since the date of their insurance commencement

    Provision: The amount of the sickness benefit is determined on the basis of the weekly average of the insured’s paid and assimilated insured earnings within the previous contribution year.

    The Illness allowance starts from the fourth day of absence from work and in the case of a self-employed worker when the first nine days of the illness pass (unless he is admitted to a nursing home and stayed at least one night – then the allowance is paid on the fourth day).

    The application must be submitted within 21 days of the day when the incapacity for work commences, and is paid retroactively.
